Add properties to the alloy steel

Add properties to the alloy steel

I want to know if it is possible to make regular steel "stainless". From what I understand stainless consist of chromium about 10 percent I think. Any way I'm wondering if properties can be added in a process or can this only be possible during actual manufacturing of the steel. And I'm not talking about chrome like stainless steel that's not to shiny.
I was figuring that ghost rider so you really can't add properties to the alloy steel. But I assume if some somehow there can be a conducting process like how people dip it to chrome.im not sure

no an alloy essentiallly does not exibit its constituent properties
if you want to add anymore the thing should be molten and hot and homogenous homogenous being the key word
and no ss essentiallly mean that thing only

Stainless steel is a combination of Iron, carbon and Chromium.
Nickel is not usually part of its composition. Nickel Allergies are common.
If the product is hypoallergenic I'm sure Nickel would not be part of its composition.

Thank you for the Correction Kalos. i wasn'rt aware that Nickel is usually in stainless steel. I am now.

Contrary to what you state Hypo-allergenic is a MARKETING term. You'll find it in advertising and marketing for all kinds of products both mainstreem and Altmed.
I see engineering and Chemistry may be the forte of this blogger. May i suggest he bloggs there rather than altmed.

The US Nickel (5¢) still contain small amounts of nickle. There was a time when they were almost entirely composed of nickle.


Nickel is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel belongs to the transition metals and is hard and ductile. Pure nickel shows a significant chemical activity that can be observed when nickel is powdered to maximize the exposed surface area on which reactions can occur, but larger pieces of the metal are slow to react with air at ambient conditions due to the formation of a protective oxide surface.


Even then, nickel is reactive enough with oxygen that native nickel is rarely found on Earth's surface, being mostly confined to the interiors of larger nickel–iron meteorites that were protected from oxidation during their time in space. On Earth, such native nickel is always found in combination with iron, a reflection of those elements' origin as major end products of supernova nucleosynthesis. An iron–nickel mixture is thought to compose Earth's inner core.


The use of nickel (as a natural meteoric nickel–iron alloy) has been traced as far back as 3500 BC. Nickel was first isolated and classified as a chemical element in 1751 by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who initially mistook its ore for a copper mineral. The element's name comes from a mischievous sprite of German miner mythology, Nickel (similar to Old Nick), that personified the fact that copper-nickel ores resisted refinement into copper. An economically important source of nickel is the iron ore limonite, which often contains 1-2% nickel. Nickel's other important ore minerals include garnierite, and pentlandite. Major production sites include the Sudbury region in Canada (which is thought to be of meteoric origin), New Caledonia in the Pacific, and Norilsk in Russia.

Because of nickel's slow rate of oxidation at room temperature, it is considered corrosion-resistant. Historically, this has led to its use: i) for plating metals such as iron and brass ii) in chemical apparatus and iii) in certain alloys that retain a high silvery polish, such as German silver. About 6% of world nickel production is still used for corrosion-resistant pure-nickel plating. Nickel was once a common component of coins, but has largely been replaced by cheaper iron for this purpose, especially since the metal is a skin allergen for some people. It was reintroduced into UK coins in 2012 despite objections from dermatologists.

Nickel is one of four elements that are ferromagnetic around room temperature. Alnico permanent magnets based partly on nickel are of intermediate strength between iron-based permanent magnets and rare-earth magnets. The metal is chiefly valuable in the modern world for the alloys it forms; about 60% of world production is used in nickel-steels (particularly stainless steel). Other common alloys, as well as some new superalloys, make up most of the remainder of world nickel use, with chemical uses for nickel compounds consuming less than 3% of production.[5] As a compound, nickel has a number of niche chemical manufacturing uses, such as a catalyst for hydrogenation. Enzymes of some microorganisms and plants contain nickel as an active site, which makes the metal an essential nutrient for them.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Stainless Steel?


I love my stainless steel appliances, love, love, love them. They look so pretty, all matchey-matchey, shiney and sparkly. 


Don't know why I could't get a straight picture... this was my third attempt!

With all that good stuff being said, I have a pet peeve. This pet peeve really only pertains to my fridge. Before I bash my fridge, I should make it clear that this fridge does many things well. It keeps all my food cold, very important. It makes me ice. It freezes stuff, and it looks good doing it.


My problem - it is not magnetized. 


This made it extremely difficult to make a magnet stick (no matter how hard I tried!).


I needed to find a solution to this. I had things that I wanted to attach to my fridge: photo's of our nieces and nephews, birth announcements, and other random things.


There is a small wall that is right next to our fridge that I wanted to turn into a magnet wall.


After much scouring of the internet, I discovered that Home Depot carried a magnetic paint. I bought said magnetic paint and left it in the capable hands of my husband, the professional painter.


The magnetic 'paint' is really a primer. The can suggests using two to three coats, the more coats = the more magnetic the wall will be. My husband found that that didn't cut it. He did about five or six coats. After finishing up with the magnetic primer, he topped it off with three coats of our kitchen wall color.


Voila!





This definitely solved my problem.


This also gave us the opportunity to get a magnetic poetry kit. Oh man, the things that can be created with a simple magnetic poetry kit.



I absolutely love it when a problem is solved. Especially when it is solved so creatively.
