WLD101: TIG Welding SBU

Welding is the process of fusing materials together.

Alternately called gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and Heliarc, TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding can be used for a wide variety of different metals and can produce a very pure, precise and attractive weld with extensive practice.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to use a basic TIG welding equipment setup to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/8" thick.
For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Note: If it has been at least nine months since you took this class and you have not used the machine since then, you must re-take the SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first SBU.

Anyone may re-take, for half price, any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special rate.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

WLD102: MIG Welding SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/4" thick.

MIG (metal inert gas) welding -- also called GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and wire feed welding -- is a semi-automatic method of welding, using a solid wire and shielding gas. With some equipment changes, MIG welding can be used for a small variety of different metals, such as stainless steel and aluminum. Many MIG welding machines can also run a tubular, flux cored wire that does not require a shielding gas (called flux cored arc welding, or FCAW).

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Note: For safety reasons, if it has been at least nine months since you took this class and you have not used the machine since then, you must re-take the SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first SBU.

Anyone may re-take, for half price, any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special rate.

WLD103: Oxy-Acetylene Torch SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to set up an oxy-acetylene torch to cut steel. You will also learn to weld steel with the Oxy torch. Imagine the possibilities for creating anything you want with steel and this amazing torch!

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

If it has been at least 9 months since you took the OXY SBU and you have not used the machine since then, you must re-take the SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first OXY SBU. Anyone can re-take any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed for half price. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special price.

WLD104: Stick Welding (SMAW) SBU

Stick welding (shielded metal arc welding, or SMAW) is an electric welding procedure that uses consumable stick electrodes that act as the electrode, filler medium and shielding mechanism all in one.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn the fundamental safety procedures accompanying arc welding as well as how to weld mild steel with commonly available electrodes. We will also cover the arc welder setup, weld preparation, electrode size/type selection, and post weld slag cleanup/removal.

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

WLD201: TIG Welding 2 - Aluminum

After completing the TIG Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you can try your skills in a different material. Aluminum has characteristics that require specific equipment setup, metal preparation and torch operation.

In this class, you will practice specific joints and improve weld bead quality under the guidance of an instructor. Lap, butt, corner and fillet welds will all be discussed and individual students will perform at their own rates. Emphasis will be placed on visual inspection of welds and heat zone theory, so that you gain a better understanding of what a quality weld joint really looks like.

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the TIG Welding SBU.

WLD205: TIG Welding 2 - Steel

After completing the TIG Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you can practice specific joints and improve weld bead quality under guidance of an instructor.

In this class, we will discuss lap, butt, corner and fillet welds, and individual students will perform at their own rates. Emphasis will be placed on visual inspection of welds and heat zone theory, so that you will gain a better understanding of what a quality weld joint really looks like.

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop (no polyesters or poly blends), and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Prerequisite: You MUST successfully complete the TIG Welding SBU in order to take this class. It is also important to have practiced your TIG skills prior to this class.

Note: For safety reasons, if it has been at least nine months since you took the TIG SBU and you have not used the machine since, you must re-take the TIG SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first TIG SBU.

Anyone may re-take, at half price, any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special rate.
