Steel is iron that has small, but important, amount of carbon(C) added to it. Steel contains between 0.2% and 2.1% carbon. And yes, it's a metal.

If you don't know what steel looks like, you're blind, because steel is absolutely everywhere.

Are you saying you've never ridden in a car? Yeah, cars are made of steel. But in fairness, it's usually painted to keep it from rusting. Hammers and nails are made of steel. Your computer probably has a lot of steel in it.

"Carbon steel", or "plain carbon steel" refers to any steel that doesn't have *other* elements added to it, only carbon. Until recently, most steel that was produced was this type, due to it's low cost.

Steel that has *other* elements added is called "Alloy steel." Different elements can be added to steel to improve it's properties.

Most common example of an "alloy steel" is stainless steel, which has significant amounts of chromium, and sometimes nickel as well. Stainless steels by definition contain at least 12% chromium by weight. Stainless steels don't rust easily.

Using steel for pipes is not only safer for people, but it is safer for the earth. Steel can be recycled. Each year, about 70 percent of all steel is recycled in North America, more than paper, aluminum, plastic and glass combined. Steel products can be recycled over and over without losing any strength. Producing steel has also gone green; almost half the world’s steel is produced in electric plants that use recycled scraps and generate no CO2 emissions.
