If stainless steel is indeed stainless, why do we have products that clean stainless steel??

Calling it "stainless" is a slight exaggeration, because it will react with the environment and can be attacked by acids, bases, salts, so it should be called "resistive steel" or something similar.

Sailboats have lots of stainless steel hardward on them, but salt water sailors allmost always rinse off their boats with fresh water after their hardware is exposed to a salty environment.
