What minimum grade of stainless steel should I look for in a kitchensink?

I have been told to not look below an 1810 grade stainless steel, but then other gradings I have seen are something like 304, or S30400. I have no idea what is what. Can someone please clarify? It's for kitchen and laundry. Thanks very much!

Usually stainless steel sinks are made with a certain thickness of metal. The lower the number the thicker the metal. An 18 gauge sink will resist damage much better than 20 or 22 gauge sinks, especially if you plan to wash you pots and pans in the sink. Pots and pans will usually dent a 22 or 20 gauge sink. Also look to see how deep the basin is, a 6 in deep basin will not allow you to wash many of your deep pots.
